“I knew sometime I would find the place I wanted to be, here in america!”

—k.c. about moving to martha’s vineyard

katharine cornell (1893-1974), or kit to her friends, was dubbed the “first lady of the theatre” for her award-winning acting prowess. in 1921, she married guthrie mcclintic, a young new york city theater director. together the two formed an unstoppable alliance, forming their own theater company where kit would act and guthrie would direct exactly whatever and however they wanted. one of her most famous roles is that of elizabeth barrett in the barrets of wimple street, a play about poet elizabeth barrett browning and her family in london.

historians widely consider kit and guthrie to have had a lavender marriage. guthrie was well known to have relationships with men, and kit had several relationships with women. kit’s long-time partner was nancy hamilton, an actress, playwright, and director of her own accord. and no wonder! nancy self-described herself as “a gay and chatty bachelor girl with a boyish haircut who has beer for breakfast.” when she was a senior at smith college, she shocked her fellow students by sneaking men into male roles for her plays—to much scandal!

kit retired from theatre after guthrie died in 1961, and spent the majority of her time on martha’s vineyard with nancy.

about the song

nancy hamilton and kit

kit and nancy always remarked about how much fun they had together, always on an adventure! desperate to find out more about them, when I read about this anecdote, I knew it had to make it into a song. kit, nancy, and guthrie toured europe together during world war 2, performing military-only shows to boost morale. in paris, gertrude stein and alice b. toklas (another famous lesbian pairing) really wanted to attend the show, so the two found some unused g.i. raincoats and caps, outfitted gertrude and alice, and no one was the wiser!

lavender

my mama always said I’d meet a nice young man
but I think there’s more to us than meets the eye
and when you asked for my hand on that central park bench
I knew we had something else in mind

cue the lights, take the stage, the greatest role I’ve ever played
greasepaint, spotlight, it’s when we come alive
in the dark of the theater the curtain’s lavender
oooh, the curtain’s lavender

you have other men, I have Hamilton
we’ll tour Europe and laugh until we cry
we’ll scheme for Gertrude Stein and pilfer GI supplies
think she and Alice are on to something right

cue the lights, take the stage, the greatest role I’ve ever played
greasepaint, spotlight, it’s when we come alive
in the dark of the theater the curtain’s lavender
oooh, the curtain’s lavender

if my love is my own and I must count the ways
it’s not denial, it’s life on center stage
two stars shine brighter anyway

the curtain’s lavender
the curtain’s lavender

cue the lights, take the stage, the greatest role I’ve ever played
greasepaint, spotlight, it’s when we come alive
in the dark of the theater the curtain’s lavender
oooh, the curtain’s lavender
